What Are Cold Drawn Bright Bars?

Cold drawn bright bars are stainless steel bars produced by drawing a previously hot rolled bar through a precision die. The drawing process reduces or controls the cross-sectional dimensions while improving dimensional consistency and surface quality.

Unlike hot rolled bars, which are primarily produced through hot rolling, cold drawn bars undergo an additional cold-working operation to achieve more controlled dimensions and a finished surface suitable for downstream machining and precision applications.

Maruti Inox supplies cold drawn bright bars in round, square and hexagonal profiles, with documented h9/h11 tolerance for round bars and h11 tolerance for square and hexagonal bars.

How Are Stainless Steel Cold Drawn Bright Bars Made?

The production of a cold drawn bright bar involves controlled processing of the stainless steel bar to achieve the required dimensions and surface condition.

The basic process includes:

  1. Hot Rolled Bar Preparation: Hot rolled stainless steel bars are used as the starting material.
  2. Surface Preparation: The bar is prepared for the cold drawing operation according to the required finishing route.
  3. Cold Drawing: The bar is pulled through a precision die to control its cross-sectional dimensions.
  4. Dimensional Control: The finished bar is checked against the specified dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  5. Inspection and Testing: Relevant chemical, mechanical and dimensional characteristics are verified before dispatch.

Maruti Inox’s integrated manufacturing route includes melting, casting, rolling and downstream cold finishing operations, with cold drawing, peeling, grinding, straightening and inspection forming part of its broader finishing capabilities.

Applications of Cold Drawn Bright Bars

Stainless steel cold drawn bright bars are commonly selected where controlled dimensions and a good surface finish are important for subsequent machining or component manufacturing.

Typical applications include:

  • Precision machined components
  • Automotive components
  • Shafts and pins
  • Fasteners and fittings
  • Engineering components
  • Machine components
  • Precision turned parts
  • Industrial equipment
  • Components requiring controlled dimensional accuracy

The appropriate stainless steel grade, profile, size and tolerance should be selected according to the requirements of the finished component and its manufacturing process.

Round, Square and Hexagonal Cold Drawn Bright Bars

Maruti Inox supplies cold drawn bright bars in three profiles to support different component and machining requirements.

Round Cold Drawn Bright Bars:
Available from 5 mm to 19 mm with h9/h11 tolerance options. Round bars are commonly selected for turned components, shafts, pins and other cylindrical parts.

Square Cold Drawn Bright Bars:
Available from 16 mm to 50 mm with h11 tolerance. The square profile provides a consistent cross-section for machining and engineering applications where a square starting material is required.

Hexagonal Cold Drawn Bright Bars:
Available from 16 mm to 50 mm with h11 tolerance. Hexagonal bars are suitable for components and machining operations where a hexagonal cross-section is required.

How to Select the Right Cold Drawn Bright Bar

Selecting the right cold drawn stainless steel bar depends on the requirements of the finished component and the downstream manufacturing process.

Stainless Steel Grade:
Select the grade according to the required corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, operating environment and manufacturing process.

Profile:
Choose round, square or hexagonal bars according to the component design and machining requirements.

Size:
The starting bar size should be selected according to the finished component dimensions and the amount of material required for subsequent machining.

Tolerance:
Specify the required tolerance based on the dimensional requirements of the finished component.

Length:
The required bar length should be considered according to cutting, handling and downstream production requirements.

Surface Requirement:
The required surface condition should be matched with the machining and finishing requirements of the final component.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cold drawn bright bars are stainless steel bars made by pulling hot rolled steel through a precision die at room temperature. This process improves the steel's surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical strength.

Maruti Inox supplies round cold drawn bright bars from 5 mm to 19 mm, while square and hexagonal bars are available from 16 mm to 50 mm. Bars can be supplied in lengths up to 6.5 metres, subject to product and order requirements.

Round cold drawn bright bars are available with h9/h11 tolerance, while square and hexagonal bars are available with h11 tolerance.

Cold drawn bright bars are used for precision machining, automotive components, shafts, pins, engineering components, machine parts and other applications where controlled dimensions and surface quality are important.

Hot rolled bars are shaped at extremely high temperatures, resulting in a rough, scaly surface and looser dimensions. Cold drawn bars undergo a secondary drawing process at room temperature, which yields a smooth, "bright" finish and highly precise dimensions.

The right cold drawn bright bar should be selected based on the stainless steel grade, profile, size, tolerance, length and downstream machining requirements. The requirements of the finished component should be considered before finalizing the material specification.
